Belief and Spirituality in the 21st Century: In Search of the “New Sacred” ¬

The studio was asked to investigate the relations between the sacred and the profane by seeking the extraordinary within the ordinariness of everyday life in Istanbul. Individuals defined their own notions of sacred and extraordinary, and determined their spatial type of study based on their experiences gained during the field trip.

The aim of the Studio was to cultivate and represent individual expressions of “sacred space” based on a literature search and the field trip to Istanbul. The site for the project is 100 rue des Ruines du Monastère, St Norbert, Winnipeg. Learning objectives required the students to write individual programmes and develop design proposals wherein the primary goal remained an investigation of the sacred or the pivoting of the sacred based on changes induced by socio-economic, cultural and political forces. The following work is the result of this study conducted at the University of Manitoba, Department of Interior Design as part of the Master of Interior Design Studio sequence.

Revealed Sacred Retreat

Khai Adderly

Described as a cultural and historical location, the St. Norbert Arts Centre is situated near the La Salle River and surrounded by a vast, natural landscape. The design for the St. Norbert Art Centre Guest house and a portion of the surrounding site is a sacred retreat center, where an individual can begin their initial journey of understanding themselves. The sacred retreat intends to define the relationship between mysticism and transparency that was explored earlier in the semester through the journal, object and poster design.

The sacred retreat, a gender inclusive centre for ages 18+, will situate itself within this still and peaceful setting, offering afacility that will heal the mind, body and soul. A service fee, the public cafe and scheduled seminars will generate revenue to support the operations of the retreat centre. With an emphasis placed on the internal and a connection between the sacred and landscape, an additional space, the sacred sanctuary will be added within the forest. The idea is for the users of the space to journey on an internal quest revealing necessary parts of themselves in the process.

Eunoia Centre for Wellness

Kara Aiello

Eunoia, a Greek word translating to “a pure and well-balanced mind, a good spirit”. Eunoia Centre for Wellness is located within the St. Norbert Arts Centre at 100 Rue du Ruines du Monastere. The wellness centre will act as a place of refuge for those to escape the busyness of the city. The concept for the project was inspired by the desire to elicit the conscious experience in users. The interior will reflect and tranquil and holistic environment. Materials, colours, and fabrics will reflect the surrounding St. Norbert site. Light neutrals and natural materials will be used throughout the majority of the space and become grounded using dark green paint and wood tones to add warmth to the space.

Visions and Varieties

Kazel Domingo

Visions and Varieties represent visual art experiences and explorations to stimulate and expand the public perception of art as a part of our life community. The goal is to link people with similar interests to collaborate through the work of art with different types of medium and to exhibit, promote art as a cornerstone of community creativity and development. It will accommodate various workshops such as digital printmaking, screen printing, lithography, letterpress. It is a place where other artists can create and collaborate with another artist and aim to help individuals to achieve personal well being and improved levels of function.

Connection Botanical Garden

Corey Harrison

Each moment that passes in time is a moment that is shared by another. Each instance can be traced back into the past, connecting you to those who have dwelled in the same place you dwell, inhabit the same spaces you inhabit and stepped in the same places you have stepped. Each of these instances, these moments within time, are isolated yet connected to one another through a shared commonality of the physical space. Creating these connections in time, a space for friends, family and individuals is the focus Connections Botanical Garden hones in on. Crafting connections within instances of time.

Located at 110 Rue des Ruines du Monastere this Botanical Garden is a complex of three pebble like pods creating a hub for social gathering and interaction. The Botanical Garden on the ground floor interacts with the surrounding nature to create a green space that members of the public can explore individually or together. Housing a cafe, event space and coworking office Connections is a place that will bring people together and share their stories and experience an elegant and enriching atmosphere.

Chrysalis Creative & Performance Art Centre

Andre Nayo

This centre is intended for youths dealing with depression as this place will act as a space of therapy and a source of release. Youths that establish a relationship with their creative side have proven to generate health benefits as this space will allow youths to express their emotions through any creative means such as visual arts therapy, musical engagement, and expressive writing. This centre will provide opportunities for youths of common problems to create an understanding that they are not alone in this situation and enable them to feel empowered to face their current set of circumstances. The use of crystals and warm tones of colors manifest the physical embodiment of creative and imagination. The design will inspire and motive these youths to project their emotions in a creative manner that will alleviate their mindset in a positive direction.
