This annual event celebrates the hard work and creative achievements of over 500 undergraduate and graduate students from every unit and level in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. Unfortunately, COVID-19 led to the cancellation of this in-person event, but sharing and celebrating student achievements must go on!
Special Topics Course: Interior Design Projects in Context
Instructor: Andrea Sosa Fontaine
The Special Topics course focused on creating connections between Interior Design, professional practice, social responsibility, and project management. Throughout the term, students worked with two local non-profit organizations, including the North East Winnipeg Historical Society and Regenesis Centre for Recovery.
Students worked in teams that mirrored the structure of real design studios in practice. Students led communication and meetings with clients, developed budgets, schedules and created thoughtful design solutions. Students also gained an understanding of the role of fiscal responsibility and contractual obligations in the business of design. Outside of the client deliverables, students also prepared and shared reflective journals to which they wrote about topics that arose in the course, reflected on their experiences and potential impact on their future careers.

The North East Winnipeg Historical Society (NEWHS) is a non-profit organization seeking to re-vitalize the North-East sectors of Winnipeg including East Kildonan, North Kildonan, and Elmwood. The scope of the project seeks to create a facility that will inspire community stewardship and enthusiasm for maintaining, contributing and celebrating stories that are relevant to local interests, community issues, personal and neighborhood identity. The design of the new space will facilitate the positive cultural exchanges and ongoing dialogues about local history through research, educating, society gatherings, local school group tours and events.
Spaces intend to include areas such as a research & archive room, multi-purpose exhibition space, with open lounges and kitchenette to achieve these goals. The design program will include a design concept, spatial adjacency, space planning, 3D imageries, furniture & finish requirements, as well as security and technology outlines.

The North East Winnipeg Historical Society is looking to expand into an archive and research center in order to offer additional programming to their served neighborhoods of North Kildonan, East Kildonan and Elmwood. The class took the Society on as clients to conduct feasibility studies to determine spatial and programme requirements as well as atmospheric and aesthetic needs. Each group concluded with intermediate design solutions and functional programmes for the NEWHS to take to investors and fundraisers for the next stage of the project. Our group’s vision for their space focused on knowledge, community and memory, and inspired our design to incorporate lots of group meeting space, archival display walls, and an open research space for collaboration and networking.
