This annual event celebrates the hard work and creative achievements of over 500 undergraduate and graduate students from every unit and level in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. Unfortunately, COVID-19 led to the cancellation of this in-person event, but sharing and celebrating student achievements must go on!
Shadow Cities: Selected Topics in History & Theory
Instructor: Lawrence Bird
This seminar explored Winnipeg’s urban spaces as they appear in recent film and other moving images. We take such images as a guide for studying the spaces themselves, often harvested by film-makers for their grit and poignancy. Where do such spaces come from? What do they mean? The seminar is conceived in dialog with Canada’s contribution to the Venice Biennale for Architecture 2020, Impostor Cities, which looks at how Canadian cities stand in for others around the world, asking: what does it mean for architecture?
