Field Notes: exploring narratives at Grasslands National Park
Kathryn McCudden
The topics course allows you to explore and refine your practicum/thesis topic through a self-directed and individualized project. To learn more about prairie conservation and public engagement, I took a field trip to Grasslands National Park, and spent three days speaking with three women who know the place deeply. The notes, observations, and lessons that I took away from the experience found their way into this origami-like visual essay, contained within a “cross-flexagon.” Though it is one piece of folded paper, the combinations of its folding and juxtaposition are numerous. The form allows the continuous narration to be broken and reassembled, the stories folding and unfolding, exposed, layered, and then hidden, much as they do as you walk the land and listen to its histories. In this way, the form of the essay captured the experience of visiting this place and learning the narratives that imbue the grasses, the water, and the wind-eroded hills.
